Recently, a case report was published in Frontiers in Psychiatry detailing a patient’s use of Kratom to help alleviate some of his COVID-19 symptoms. If you’re familiar with Kratom or our blog, you might know that the research done on Kratom is limited. Because of this, we want to stay up to date on Kratom research. This research shows the link between Kratom and COVID could be meaningful.
We can’t lie, the actual case report is… dense. So, we’ve provided a quick break down of the facts of the case for your ease of reading below. Additionally, if you would like to read the full text of the case report, click here.
COVID-19 is associated with fever, aches and pains, difficulty breathing, cough, including coughing up blood, fatigue, and headaches, among other things. Because of these common symptoms, even mild cases of COVID-19 can affect quality of life.
Initially, there was a question about ibuprofen and COVID. At first, the NSAID seemingly worsened the illness, instead of treating any symptoms. There is still a debate about NSAID use with COVID-19. Because of this, there has even been a drop in ibuprofen sales worldwide. With this in mind, the authors felt it important to consider other options to help treat COVID symptoms.
This case report details the use of Kratom to successfully treat COVID-19 symptoms by a patient.
The patient in this report is a 29 year old male living in the United States. He works full-time as a biomedical research technician. He has been historically healthy, except for some well treated conditions in his youth. The subject leads an active lifestyle. For example, he participates in running, weightlifting, basketball, and baseball. Further, he claims he has no history of smoking, drinking, or illicit drug use.
On April 25, 2020, the subject started to feel body aches and tiredness. Over the next day his symptoms got worse, including tiredness, weakness, loss of appetite, slight cough, body aches, loss of taste and smell, sore throat, and fever. As a result, the subject went to his doctor and got a COVID-19 test done. The test came back positive.
The patient was ordered to self isolate, and was given medicine to help with his symptoms. Even though he followed doctor’s orders, his symptoms, other than fever, did not improve. He began feeling depressed, spending long periods of time in bed. The pain levels were also increasing, a 7 out of 10 on a scale of 1-10. Because the medicine was not effective, the patient sought out relief from Kratom.
Treatment with Kratom for COVID 19
The patient took 2.5 grams of green Bali Kratom with water. As a result, after 30 minutes, the patient felt much less pain and fatigue. Further, within an hour he had mild euphoria for about 5 hours. After 6 hours, the effects of the Kratom wore off, and the subject took another dose. Altogether, he took Kratom three times a day continuously for three days.
Outcome of Kratom and COVID 19
The subject made scores from 0%-100% on how the Kratom did with the COVID-19 symptoms. The ratings are 80% improvement of fatigue and weakness. 70% improvement of tiredness. 80% improvement of body aches. 90% improvement of muscle pain. However, the Kratom did not have an effect on fever, cough, or sore throat.
The subject said “I didn’t have anxiety or any psychological symptoms. For me, Kratom mainly gave improvement in physical reaction. It also elevated my mood and made me feel less miserable. To the point where I was able to get out of bed, shower, look at work emails without feeling completely exhausted and drained.”
Over the next two weeks the subject began to feel better. On May 13, 2020 he took a COVID-19 test that came back negative. The patient said he did not have any negative effects from Kratom, except for the bad taste. Additionally, he was able to stop using Kratom right after becoming well without any physical or mental withdrawal symptoms.
The patient also had Kratom left over, and agreed to provide samples for chemical analysis.
Kratom Sample Analysis
Chemical analysis done on the Kratom sample showed that there was no evidence of adulteration or tampering. The product was pure Kratom.
Discussion of Kratom and COVID 19
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first case report on the use of Kratom for COVID-19 symptoms. The findings show that short-term Kratom use has the potential to alleviate COVID-19 symptoms, primarily pain. Further, the Kratom use did not seem to cause any withdrawal symptoms with the short term use.
With the scale of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the ineffectiveness of symptom treatments available, it is necessary to consider alternatives. Kratom is a possible alternative that could offer immediate relief of those symptoms.
The authors believe that Kratom research is promising. However, they do call for more clinical studies to be performed. With more study, researchers could identify safe dosages and potential side effects. Hopefully, with more study Kratom could be a viable alternative to help COVID-19 patients.
