So, you’re learning about Kratom. You’ve found what it is and what it’s used for, but how is Kratom processed? There are quite a few steps in Kratom processing. From growing, to harvesting, to washing, to drying, to milling, to packaging, we’ll explain every step of the Kratom making process for you below.

Growing Kratom

Kratom, or Mitragyna Speciosa, is a tree native to Southeast Asia related to the coffee family. These trees can grow up to 80 feet tall in their natural ecosystem! Kratom grown for processing receives special attention. This is because the specific ratios of sunlight, water, and nutrients that these trees receive will affect the alkaloids present in the final Kratom product. Consequently, these alkaloid levels are what give Kratom its special qualities.

Harvest Time

Once the Kratom leaves have reached maturity, they must be harvested from the tree. When the leaves are considered mature depends on which type of Kratom you want in the final result. For instance, red Kratom strains are typically made with more mature leaves than the other color veins.

A skilled worker climbs the towering Kratom trees, chopping off large bundles of leaves and dropping them to the floor below. For example, you can watch a video of someone doing this here.

Washing Kratom

The Kratom must then be washed to make sure it is free of contaminants and debris.

During this process the workers also get a chance to visually inspect each individual leaf. This ensures that no leaves get into the Kratom batch that are not of the highest quality.

Air Dry

Next, the Kratom leaves lay to dry. Depending on the product wanted, there are multiple processes to dry the Kratom. Some Kratom leaves dry in full sun, some in the shade, and some dry partially in both. Every step of the processing affects the alkaloid levels present in the final product.

Red Bentuangie Kratom

This type of Kratom goes through a unique fermentation process before it dries. This gives it a dark, rich color and potent smell. The fermentation of the Red Bentuangie leaves increases and improves the alkaloids held within. This process happens by putting the fresh, raw Kratom leaves into a bag. This traps moisture inside and allows the leaves to ferment. Once fermented, the leaves dry like normal for further processing.

Milling & Grinding

Next, the Kratom undergoes the grinding process. Traditionally, this happens with a mortar and pestle. However, now Kratom is a more advanced operation. The Kratom grinding process happens in industrial grade grinders, now.

Sometimes, the Kratom is crushed or shredded before the final grinding. This makes the process more manageable. Top quality Kratom is a fine grind and has the consistency of flour.

Packaging

Finally, once the Kratom is in its powdered form, it gets its packaging. For this, some Kratom gets its packaging all on its own. Some Kratom comes in gel capsules that make it easier to take. Importantly, both the capsules and the powder need to be airtight. This is because Kratom is a natural product, and it can degrade with exposure to air over time.
