What Is Delta 8?
Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol, or Delta 8 THC, or simply delta 8, is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. Other naturally occurring cannabinoids include THC, CBD, and HHC, along with over 100 more that scientists have identified.

Even though delta 8 occurs naturally in the cannabis plant, it occurs in very low concentrations within the plant. For this reason, delta 8 available on the market is almost entirely synthetically created from other cannabinoid structures.
How Is it Made?
Because there is such a low concentration of delta 8 naturally occurring in cannabis plants, it is not feasible at a large scale to extract delta 8 directly from plants. Instead, delta 8 production happens in a lab. This process is, well, not simple. Delta 8 is created through a process called “isomerization” — defined by Britannica as “the chemical process by which a compound is transformed into any of its isomeric forms, i.e., forms with the same chemical composition but with different structure or configuration and, hence, generally with different physical and chemical properties.”
Basically, scientists in a lab with very advanced equipment use isolated CBD that has been extracted from cannabis. Through a series of complex chemical processes, delta 8 is created from the CBD structures. You see, CBD and delta 8 have all of the same components as each other, they’re just in a different order. Science has figured out how to reorder the CBD molecules to become delta 8.
How Are Delta 8 Edibles Made?
Through the process outlined above, scientists turn CBD molecules into delta 8 molecules. The end result is a delta 8 distillate in the form of an oil. Once this is complete, the hard part is over. Making gummies and edibles is easy! Even on a large scale, the process is basically the same as making any edibles or gummies at home. Follow the recipe for the specific treat with enough of the delta 8 distillate for the strength required.
Of course, production level operations of delta 8 edibles are a little more high-tech and detail-oriented than your home kitchen. These facilities must stay pristinely clean, the measurements of each ingredient have to be exact, and the final products undergo rigorous testing before heading to market. These types of production standards and requirements ensure a safe and consistent product.
Effects & Benefits
It’s easiest to describe the deltas (delta 8, delta 9, delta 10) in relation to one another. Delta 8 is comparatively close to an indica strain of delta 9 (regular ol’ THC). If you’re familiar, indica refers to strains of cannabis that often induce relaxation, calm, and sleepiness. However, don’t expect delta 8 to have exactly the same benefits as an indica delta 9. While the effects are similar, delta 8 is a less potent experience.
Delta 8 is less psychoactive than delta 9 is. This means that it is not going to induce as much of a “high” as traditional THC. However, the calming, soothing effects are certainly still present. Some people actually prefer the effects of delta 8 over classic cannabis. For people who get anxious and paranoid with THC, delta 8 can offer the positive benefits without the heavy psychoactive side effects.
